spy equipment
"Acoustic Kitty"
Britain along with many other countries used plenty of spy equipment In World War 2. They used things like the liberator pistol, which was a 45. caliber single shot pistol that was usually used for agents infiltrating areas behind enemy lines. The gun was a favorite with the government because it was cheap and easy to make. The downside to the pistol was that it was an un-rifled pistol so the accuracy wasn't great. another thing the British used was the acetone time delay fuse. The acetone would eat through a celluloid disk that would release a firing pin to detonate explosives. This type of fuse was commonly used with limpet mines. This was very dangerous spy equipment, according to Ultimate Spy, By H Keith Melton, “A limpet mine was a waterproof mine designed to sink or damage ships.” When placed on the side of the ship, it could blow a 25. foot hole in the side of a ship.
In World War 2, the CIA thought of the clever idea of making a special monopoly board that they would put in German camps. These monopoly boards would be full of compasses, maps, weapons, anything to help an agent escape. The KGB used a weapon known as the "Kiss of Death." which was a lipstick tube that would shoot poisonous darts out of them. A cat was split open (with surgery) and stuffed with a radio, and had its tail wired so it could turn into an antenna. The cat recovered from surgery, and the CIA trained the cat to go out and sit by people, listen to their conversations, and follow them wherever they went. This was known as "Acoustic Kitty."
Some of these gadgets might seem a little extreme, but these are the things they would have to do, to get information. They call it the golden age of spies because all the countries were using them. This meant they had to go to the extreme to be able to get away with spying.
